Refrigerated Van Rental for the Holidays: How SoCal Food Businesses Get Through the Rush

Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and for food businesses in Southern California, the busiest six weeks of the year have already started. Lineage, one of the largest cold-storage operators in the world, notes that demand for holiday meal products runs over five times higher than at other times of the year. Turkeys, hams, pies, seafood, prepared trays — everything moves at once, and all of it needs to stay cold.

The ordering window is just as compressed. FoodStorm, which runs catering platforms for grocery retailers, reports that 71% of Thanksgiving orders were placed between October 20 and November 20. In other words, the bookings are happening right now — and the cold storage to fulfill them has to be lined up before the product arrives, not after.

If your walk-in is already full in October, November will not fix that. This is the season when a rented refrigerated van, truck, or trailer stops being a backup plan and becomes part of the operation.

Why the Holidays Break Cold Storage First

Most commercial kitchens and grocery departments run their coolers close to capacity on a normal week. The holidays add three problems at the same time:

  • More inventory. Holiday proteins and prepared foods arrive early and in bulk. A case of turkeys takes the shelf space of a normal week’s worth of product.
  • More door openings. Every catering pickup, delivery run, and restock warms the box up a little. Packed coolers recover slowly because cold air can’t circulate around tightly stacked containers.
  • Less slack in the schedule. When every day is a deadline — a wedding on Saturday, office parties all week, Thanksgiving on Thursday — there’s no slow day to catch up or absorb a problem.

A rental unit gives you a pressure valve: extra cold space that sits in your parking lot or loading area, plugged in and holding temperature, for exactly the weeks you need it.

Who Rents Refrigerated Vans in November and December

Caterers are the biggest holiday renters. Off-site events mean food has to travel and then hold at temperature for hours before service. A refrigerated van handles both jobs — transport and on-site holding — and plugs into a standard 120V outlet when parked, so it doesn’t need to idle at the venue.

Restaurants rent for overflow: holiday parties and banquet prep mean more product on hand than the walk-in was built for. A van parked out back is cheaper than turning down bookings.

Grocery stores, delis, and meat and seafood counters rent trucks and trailers for the seasonal surge — extra turkeys before Thanksgiving, hams and roasts before Christmas, and the prepared-foods volume that comes with both.

Bakeries need cold room for butter-heavy doughs, finished cakes, and pie production that runs weeks ahead of the holidays.

Florists are easy to overlook, but holiday arrangements are cut flowers moving through warm delivery routes — a refrigerated van protects the most perishable inventory they handle all year.

Event planners and venues rent trailers as stationary cold storage for weddings, company parties, and New Year’s Eve events where the kitchen was never sized for 300 guests.

Van, Truck, or Trailer: Matching the Vehicle to the Job

Refrigerated vans — from $99/day. Cargo space from 8 to 14 feet, temperatures from −8°F to +40°F, and capacity up to 3,500 lbs. They drive like a regular van — no commercial license required — and on standby they plug into a standard 120V/20A outlet, holding temperature without running the engine. This is the right call for catering runs, deliveries, and small-to-mid overflow.

Refrigerated trucks — from $179/day. A 15-foot box with 4,000 lb capacity and a 1,500 lb liftgate, holding +25°F to +40°F. Built for grocery and distributor work: palletized loads, multi-stop routes, and heavier cases.

Refrigerated trailers — from $159/day. 15 feet of cold space with 6,700 lb capacity that plugs into 115V power and stays put. A trailer is the most economical way to add a second walk-in for the season — park it, plug it in, load it.

Need it for the whole season? Monthly leasing starts at $1,999/mo, which usually beats stacking daily rentals from mid-November through New Year. Full rate details for daily, weekly, and monthly terms are on our pricing page.

Book Early — the Calendar Works Against You

Rental fleets are finite, and every caterer and grocer in the region is looking at the same six weeks. The operators who get the vehicle they want are the ones who reserve in October, while there’s still a choice of van, truck, or trailer. If your dates are set — event days, delivery routes, the week of Thanksgiving — lock the vehicle in and adjust later if you need to.

We’re based in Walnut, with locations in Chino and North Las Vegas, and we serve Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego counties plus the Las Vegas area. We’re open 24/7 through the season, including Thanksgiving week and Christmas week, because that’s when our customers are working.

Planning holiday volume? Call (626) 675-0614 — refrigerated vans start at $99/day — or send a booking request with your dates and we’ll confirm availability.
